Nell Adams
Hello, thank you for visiting my webpage. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance to you. I am fortunate to be employed in this department and to have the opportunity to work with supportive colleagues and industrious students. Both teach me much about life and music.
Prior to my position at Mississippi College, I taught for seventeen years as a member of the music faculty at Clarke College. For several years I was a board member of the Mississippi Music Educators Conference and served as advisor to the state student chapters in the college division. A music minister in two area churches during the 1980’s and 1990’s, I held offices in the Mississippi Baptist Church Music Conference and served a term as president. I presently am Director of Music at Fondren Presbyterian Church in Jackson.
A native of Amelia Island, Florida, I have two daughters and two grandchildren.
About Me
Since 1992, I have taught voice and related subjects at Mississippi College where, as a tenured faculty member, I am an Associate Professor of Music. I received Bachelor of Music (vocal emphasis) and Master of Music degrees in Music Education from William Carey College. I also earned a Master of Music degree in Vocal Pedagogy from Mississippi College and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from The University of Southern Mississippi.
A mezzo-soprano, my solo appearances include Beethoven's Mass in C, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Saint-Saens' Christmas Oratorio, Vivaldi's Gloria, Handel's Messiah and Dixit Dominus, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Mozart's Requiem and Solemn Verpers, Honneger's King David, and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. I have sung with the Symphony Orchestra of Jackson, Jackson's Choral Society, the Meridian Symphony Orchestra and also the Meridian Community Chorus. Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, Benjamin Britten, and James Sclater are among my favorite composers for recital repertoire--not to mention Broadway show tunes! It is my privilege to adjudicate and also to work with rising vocal and choral students at various venues within the area.
I hold membership in the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.
